5 Badass Women in Comics That Could Teach us a Thing or Two

The comic world definitely doesn’t lack its share of kick-ass women who could easily defeat even the most vicious villain and even kick a few of our mightiest heroes to the curve. And while it may seem that the world of comics is a boy’s world, here are 5 badass women and the valuable lessons they taught us about what makes a shero.

Agent Carter

What Peggy Carter lacks in superpowers she makes up in wit, courage, and nerves of steel… all while wearing heels and a skirt. Set in 1940s America when so many people believed a women’s place was the kitchen, comes Agent Carter to prove them wrong. After standing her ground on the battlefield in World War 2, Peggy shines as one of Britain’s top secret service agents despite being treated as a glorified secretary by her male colleagues. While mainstream media portrayed her as Captain America’s love interest and left it at that if you were lucky enough, you were able to see just what an amazing character she is in her short-lived series, Agent Carter, and later as Captain Carter in Disney’s What If. So what is Peggy’s life lesson for us? Never be disheartened by people’s perceptions of who you are.

Polaris

As Magneto’s daughter, Lorna Dane, Polaris, possesses the same abilities as her father even though she has never fully unleashed the full extent of her powers into the world. The exact limits of her magnetic power are unknown. Polaris is considered an Alpha Level Class Mutant, placing her at the same level as Storm, Iceman, Phoenix, Xavier, and of course, Magneto. In one storyline, Lorna has the ability to ingest virulent diseases without harm and spread them as a “meta-plague”, killing anyone that’s not immune. Driven by the curiosity of her power, Lorna is an expert in geophysics and has a master’s degree in the field. Despite the hardships of her character including battling depression, Lorna is resilient, powerful, and a force to be reckoned with.

Raven

Raven, also known as Rachel Roth, is a Teen Titan hero with magical abilities who not only fights villains but must also battle with her inner demon. Raven is a half-breed of her human mother Angela Roth and the demon overlord Emperor Trigon. Her father's power manifests through Raven, making her a powerful witch with quite a few unique abilities. One of those abilities is astral projection. Her Soul-Self is as powerful as her and can fight, manifest a force field, manipulate objects and others, and serve as Raven's eyes and ears. What makes her truly powerful is that despite her half-demon origin, she chooses to fight for good, and her storyline includes plenty of instances where good wins over evil.

Mystique

A true rebel who walks to the rhythm of her own tune, Mystique is one powerful mutant. Her most famous power allows her to alter the formation of her cells at will. Her control is so exact, she can become an exact duplicate of anybody she chooses, right down to the person’s retina patterns, fingertips, and vocal cords. After being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, she became even more powerful, adapting her body to the situation including mimicking the textures of metals. She is fast, strong, agile, and has accelerated healing and toxin resistance. Her unique powers also give her retarded aging, making her close to being over 100 years old. But Mystique doesn’t just rely on her natural-given abilities. She is a highly-skilled combatant, a trained actress, and an expert marksman. And as if that wasn’t enough, she is also omni-linguistic, meaning she has the power to instantly speak and understand any language fluently. Phew!

Ahsoka Tano

While Ahsoka Tano is not technically a character in a comic, her badassery definitely places her on this list. We first meet Ahsoka when she is assigned to be Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan. Eager to prove herself, Ahsoka quickly learns from Skywalker’s recklessness and dangerous walk along the edge of the rules. While this foolhardy attitude makes them bud heads at first, Anakin and Ahsoka become good friends and she learns some very valuable lessons from her master. What makes Ahsoka truly unique is that, when given the choice, she chooses her ideals and her beliefs even if that means never becoming a true Jedi Knight. She later draws from her experiences and the world she lives in to truly find the balance of the Force. Ahsoka follows her internal compass and doesn’t allow others’ opinions of “what’s best” to cloud her judgment and for that, she has earned a place on this list.

Rebellious, troublesome, bossy, intense, loud are often terms used to describe women in a derogatory manner but these amazingly epic female characters are here to change the meaning of those words and show us exactly how powerfully positive these words can actually be.
